“I personally believe, that US Americans are unable to do so, because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education, like such as, South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like, such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here in the US, should help the US, or should help South Africa, and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future.” — L. Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina, explaining why 20% of Americans cannot find our country on a world map

This is so painful to watch.
Did you see her this morning on the Today Show…she tried to redeem herself.

I don’t really care if she has an answer for this question. It’s complex, and she’s just a pageant winner.

But the ability to speak in complete understandable sentences would be a plus.

I first heard about it on the Glenn Beck radio show on Monday morning, then read about it Monday afternoon on the National Review Online website, then saw it on television Monday night on the David Letterman show.

I didn’t see her on the Today show, but I did read about it; by all accounts, she’s quite a smart girl who was just completely flustered and confused by the question. She doesn’t even seem to mind the attention.
