    This one was tricky! The previous two paydays, the father had blown the money on demon rum — but this time, God burned the saloon down, so I expected a happy ending.

    But Chick said no.

    The storm also destroyed the bridge to the house, and — bizarrely — the cold, ailing son decided to cross the river sans shoes.

    BAM! Pneumonia express! Perhaps the saddest tract I’ve read yet.
